Sensei Sean has over 25 years of experience practicing Goju Ryu Karate-do. He has been teaching for over 17 years. He is the founder, and head instructor of Shugyō Karate Dōjō.
He currently holds the rank of Sandan (3rd degree black belt). Sensei Sean is currently working towards his shodan (1st degree black belt) in kobudo under Sensei Mac Newton. He is a member of the Ryûkyû Kobudô Tesshinkan. He also has experience in Judo, BJJ, and military unarmed combat. He has competed in a karate, and mixed martial arts events.
Sensei Sean has had many instructors over the years. He started his journey in Goju Ryu Karate-do under Kyoshi James Fries. His current teacher is Tetsuji Nakamura Sensei (World Head Instructor of IOGKF International).
Sensei Sean has a passion for learning. He has trained with many world-renowned martial artists such as Morio Higaonna Sensei, Sifu Larry Hartsell, Heath Herring, and Chuck Liddell. Sensei Sean is an NCCP trained karate coach, and he maintains his First Aid, CPR, and AED certification with the Canadian Red Cross.
Sensei Sean's approach to teaching is to lead by example. Every class he leads is dynamic. His classes include a full body warm-up in the traditional method (junbi undo), basic techniques (kihon), prearranged exercises (kata), partner drills (kumite, randori, and kakie). Every class he instructs always starts and finishes with respect. Sensei Sean always has a motivational message to inspire his students.
